“The Dualists”, read by Martin Heckmann, is one of the “three wicked stories” of the title and the writing is as devilish as it is intelligent. After many years of hope and anxiety, the childhood wish of Sophonisba and Ephraim Bubb is fulfilled; from that point on, the angelic twins, Zerubbabel and Zacariah, are the centre of their undivided and loving attention. Now in the house to the right of family Bubb there live the Merfords with their son, Harry, and to the left of them, the Santons with their son, Tommy – two quarrelsome boys, who just happened to have chosen, of all places, the Bubb’s back garden shed as their hideout, from where they indulge their passion for destruction. Using their pocket knives they set to work on tables, stools, picture frames, coat racks and indeed also small animals – and their hunger for more seems insatiable …
